Wind turbine blades and other major wind farm components required for construction of the Nullagine Wind Farm.

The components must be unloaded through Berths 1 and 2 and transported to Fortescue's Kanyirri Staging Yard before continuing to the project site, with the blades travelling in part of Fortescues private road to assist with any congestion Fortescue has worked closely with Pilbara Ports, Main Roads WA and Contracting Partners  to ensure the logistics program is managed safely and with minimal disruption to the community. 

Fortescue has implemented a range of measures to minimise disruption, including upgrading the Port Wilson/Gilbert Street exit, staging components at Kanyirri, utilising Fortescue private road, upgrading Shire of East Pilbara road network and ensuring compliance to the MRWA Transport Management Plan. Community notifications will also be provided throughout the delivery program to keep residents informed. 

Multiple vessels are expected to arrive throughout the delivery program. Information about upcoming arrivals will be shared as schedules are confirmed.

Arrival dates are subject to shipping schedules, weather conditions and operational requirements. Updates will be provided ahead of each arrival. 

Each wind turbine blade is approximately 89 metres long. 

To put that into perspective, a single blade is more than twice the length of a Boeing 737 aircraft and around the length of nine standard city buses placed end-to-end. 

The size of the blades helps maximise the amount of wind energy that can be captured and converted into electricity. 

Due to their size, the blades require specialised transport arrangements and may occasionally result in temporary traffic management measures along sections of the transport route. 

Fortescue will provide advance notice of major transport activities and work to minimise impacts on road users wherever possible. 

The blades are transported using specialised heavy haulage equipment operated by experienced Contracting Partner’s. 

Cargo movements are carefully planned, staged  and transported line with MRWA requirements to ensure , a safety controls are in place throughout the journey. 

Community members may see specialised transport vehicles carrying individual 89-metre turbine blades between Port Hedland and the project site. 

Given their size, the blades are expected to be a highly visible part of the delivery program and represent a significant milestone in construction of the wind farm. 

Transport schedules will depend on operational, weather and safety requirements. Advance notice will be provided wherever possible. 

No. The wind turbine blades do not meet the requirements for night-time movement and will be transported during approved operating hours. 

Transport will occur over multiple campaigns as vessels arrive and components are delivered to site. 

Temporary traffic management measures may be required at certain times. Any impacts to road access or traffic conditions will be communicated in advance. 

Some short-term delays may occur during transport operations. Traffic management arrangements will be implemented to minimise disruption where possible. 

Safety is our highest priority. All transport activities will be undertaken in accordance with approved transport management plans and relevant regulatory requirements. 

Motorists should follow instructions from escort vehicles, traffic controllers and road signage and exercise caution when travelling near oversized loads.
