Scaling Beyond Replacing Fossil Fuels

A conventional mine runs on diesel. It’s simple. Fuel arrives, power flows, operations follow.

A Real Zero mine is a different kind of system. Renewable generation varies across the day. Energy moves across hundreds of kilometres of transmission. Hundreds of electric machines charge, operate, return and charge again. Six processing plants run continuously. A port ships year-round.

Coordinating all of that, in real time, without interruption, across a network the size of a small country, requires a level of intelligence that only technology can deliver.

Without it, Real Zero is a concept. With it, it’s an operating model.

The technology behind real zero

We’re building and deploying technology across four interconnected areas, each one essential, all of them working together.

    Energy Management and AI

Our AI systems sit across the Green Grid, reading generation, storage and demand in real time and making continuous decisions about where energy goes and when. Forecasting hours ahead, optimising continuously and keeping the system balanced as conditions change across the Pilbara.

  • Autonomous Fleet Technology

More than 200 autonomous haul trucks operate across our Pilbara sites, coordinated remotely through the HIVE. Our autonomous systems combine fleet management software, AI-driven routing and real-time monitoring to keep equipment moving safely and efficiently, around the clock.

  • Battery Systems & Intelligence

Our high-performance battery systems are built for the heat, dust and 24/7 demands of industrial operations. Elysia, developed by Fortescue Zero, goes further — turning battery systems into connected decision-makers with real-time safety alerts, charging optimisation and end-of-life forecasting across our entire electric fleet.

  • Data & Operational Intelligence

Our operations generate vast amounts of data across energy systems, equipment, scheduling and logistics. We’re building the tools to turn that data into decisions, from AI-assisted schedule optimisation to predictive maintenance and real-time performance monitoring across the network.

What the technology delivers

These aren’t systems built for their own sake. Every piece of technology we develop and deploy is measured against what it delivers in the real world.

  • Operations without fossil fuels

Energy management, autonomous equipment and battery intelligence work together to keep operations running continuously on renewable power. No diesel backup. No offsets. Real Zero in practice.

  • Lower costs over time

Smarter energy use means less waste. Predictive maintenance means less unplanned downtime. Autonomous operations mean greater precision and consistency. The technology compounds the economics of Real Zero, making the business case stronger the further we go.

  • A model others can follow

We build and prove technology on our own sites first. What works in the Pilbara gets taken further (through Fortescue Zero’s commercialisation arm) to other heavy industries and markets that need to decarbonise. Our operations are the proof of concept. The technology is the product.
