A 760 kilometre heavy-haul railway links our Pilbara operations to our purpose built rail and port facilities at Herb Elliott Port in Port Hedland.
Located on Kariyarra Country in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, Port Hedland is where our integrated supply chain comes together. Every year, we load and ship in excess of 990 carriers of iron ore to customers around the world.
Built for scale. Connected for speed. And now evolving for something bigger. The decarbonisation of heavy industry.
Heavy industry doesn’t decarbonise in one place. It takes new systems across every part of the supply chain.
At Port Hedland, that means testing battery-electric vehicles, replacing diesel-powered rail and helping prove zero emissions shipping can work at commercial scale.
Real assets. Real infrastructure. Real-world conditions.
Two battery-electric locomotives are soon to be operating on our mainline rail network as part of real-world trials designed to decarbonise heavy-haul rail. When fully deployed, the transition could eliminate more than 85 million litres of diesel every year. Diesel powered our rail network for decades. Now we’re building what comes next.

Every year, more than 990 carriers depart from Herb Elliott Port carrying iron ore to customers around the world.
Our heavy-haul railway stretches 760 kilometres from Christmas Creek, Cloudbreak, Solomon and Eliwana to Port Hedland. One of the fastest heavy-haul rail networks in the world.
Magnetite concentrate travels 100 kilometres from Iron Bridge to Port Hedland through a slurry pipeline before being dewatered, stacked and prepared for export. No trucks. No rail. Just one of the most efficient concentrate handling systems in the world.
Our Herb Elliott Port Facility at Anderson Point can safely and efficiently export more than 200 million tonnes of iron ore annually to customers worldwide.
From decarbonising rail to green shipping and battery-electric transport, Port Hedland is helping reshape how heavy industry moves.
If you want to work on the systems, infrastructure and technology driving Real Zero at scale, this is where it’s happening.
