It only takes a moment of lapse

Heavy and light vehicle collisions are shared risk across the mining industry.

Hundreds of times, every day, Heavy Mobile Equipment (HME) and Light Vehicles (LVs) come within 20 metres of each other. Even with the strongest rules and procedures, when we rely on human intervention alone we leave ourselves open to error, blind spots and split-second judgement calls. That’s when interactions can escalate quickly.

Our CAS intervenes before an interaction becomes an incident.

How CAS helps prevent collisions

When an LV enters the 20-metre exclusion zone, our CAS uses Level 9 proximity detection (intervention control), which means it not only detects the interaction, it can also intervene automatically in real time. It does this by triggering a control response that applies the brakes on HME to help prevent escalation.

No hesitation. No judgement call. No reliance on reaction time.

Zero collisions where our CAS is active

Deployed across more than 400 assets in Fortescue’s Pilbara operations, our CAS has proven to be a reliable and effective way to prevent collisions between HME and LVs.

We’ve recorded ZERO collisions between HME and LVs where our CAS is active since deployment in 2023. In 2025, we avoided 194 potential collisions through real-time interventions where braking was required to stop escalation.

Simple by Design. Built for Operations.

Built for real sites. Simple, fast to deploy, and cost effective.

Key benefits:

  • No reliance on cellular or Wi-Fi infrastructure
  • No costly LIDAR or radar required
  • No additional in-cab screens - reducing operator distraction
  • Integrates with OEM braking systems without voiding warranties
  • Compatible with any Fleet Management System (FMS) or Autonomous Haulage System (AHS)

Introducing HaulX

Next-gen mining intelligence, built by miners for miners.

HaulX is Fortescue’s mining technology suite, built from real operational challenges and proven in live environments.

CAS is the first deployed capability of HaulX, with additional technologies coming soon.

HaulX brings together four core solution layers

  • Fleet Management System (FMS)

Increases your mines productivity, by optimising routes, maximising fleet utilisation, and executing the daily mine plan through assignment and blending engines. Proven to track over 300 million tonnes of material across Fortescue’s Eliwana and Iron Bridge operations.

  • Machine Guidance System (MGS)

Improves the recovery of your resouces by leveraging high-precision Global Navigation Satellite System (high-accuracy satellite positioning) and advanced sensors to provide accurate guidance bucket and blade positions (+/-200mm). Supports compliance to mine plan designs, efficient material extraction, and advanced block reconciliation.

  • Autonomous Haulage System (AHS)

Increases utilisation of your fleet with an automation and control layer that enables driverless haul trucks to operate safely and efficiently.

  • Collision Avoidance System (CAS)

Everyone goes home safe. CAS leverages Level 9 proximity detection (intervention control), which means it not only detects the interaction, it can also intervene automatically in real time. It does this by triggering a control response that applies the brakes on HME, when an LV enters 20m, to help prevent escalation.
