Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)

Fortescue has selected the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as a key partner to become world leaders in green industrial products.

We propose to develop the potential of the lower Congo River to power green industries. The proposed Grand Inga Project includes development of up to approximately 44 gigawatts of hydroelectric power. This would be the world’s largest single source of renewable energy and the beginning of green industry development in the DRC.

The proposed project can provide significant national economic opportunities. In partnership with the DRC, Fortescue will seek to establish training facilities to maximise local community participation in the workforce as part of its support for the development.

Grand Inga project

Our proposal in the Democratic Republic of Congo is to create a major downstream green hydrogen and green ammonia industry.

Fortescue is planning to develop the long anticipated Grand Inga Hydroelectric Project, including the Matadi and the Pioka projects. Importantly, the project will include downstream green industry processing and an inter-connected port precinct.

It will be a fully integrated process that adds value in the DRC. The entire system will be delivered and operated by Fortescue, using hydropower and water to make valuable green products for domestic use and global export.

What we're doing in communities

Fortescue was founded on the belief that communities should thrive as a result of our success.

We have an office and team in the DRC and will continue to engage with communities to embrace social and environmental values, and local cultures.

We are committed to empowering thriving communities by delivering positive social, environmental and economic benefits, through continuous, transparent and ongoing dialogue.

Fortescue will provide training, employment and business development opportunities for local people in support of construction and operational activities.

We're leading the green industrial revolution

We’re developing the technologies to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors (like our iron ore operations) while building a global portfolio of renewable energy projects.

Green iron and green steel presents a huge opportunity for the iron ore industry and we are working hard to ensure we are at the forefront of technologies being developed in this regard.

By harnessing the world’s renewable energy resources to produce renewable electricity, green hydrogen, green ammonia and other green industrial products, we’ll help our planet step beyond fossil fuels.
