Fortescue donates ambulance to Gibb Challenge helping raise funds for local charities

Fortescue Metals Group (ASX: FMG, Fortescue) has donated a four wheel drive ambulance to organisers of the Gibb Challenge annual charity bike ride to support fundraising for the Kyle Andrews Foundation and other local charities close to riders’ hearts.

Having been stationed at Fortescue’s Thomas Yard rail facilities in South Hedland and replaced by an upgraded model, the Toyota LandCruiser Troop Carrier ambulance will now support riders as they compete in a 700 kilometre team relay along one of Australia’s most renowned 4WD routes, the Gibb River Road, for many years to come.
Among the riders will be two Fortescue teams, one from the company’s rail operations and another from its Herb Elliott Port, each campaigning for the title of highest fundraiser and the Gibb Challenge victors.
Fortescue Chief Executive Officer Nev Power said the company’s donation as well as the participation and fundraising by its Port Hedland workforce was another great example of the philanthropic spirit celebrated at Fortescue.
“We are delighted to support the valuable work of everyone involved in the Gibb Challenge with the donation of an ambulance. Our people taking part in this year’s event are helping to raise all-important funds for a local charity supporting children from North West Australia and their families, and we are very proud of their efforts,” Mr Power said.
“We hope there is no need for the ambulance during any of the planned events, but with safety our top priority, we’re pleased to know that the vehicle will always be on hand.”
The Gibb Challenge founder Simon Rimmer expressed his gratitude for Fortescue’s generosity and explained the significant impact the donation would have on future events.
“To have our own ambulance has been a goal of ours for a number of years, but one that we’ve not been able to realise. Each year we face the enormous challenge of having to juggle the resources of a number of external organisations to be available when we need them to run our community fundraising events,” Mr Rimmer said.
“Fortescue’s donation of a fully specified 4WD ambulance ensures that every event we manage has appropriate paramedic support and provides us with increased independence and flexibility to run even more fundraising community events. Quite simply, it’s a game changer.
“We are so excited and very appreciative for the support and generosity from everyone at Fortescue.”
The Gibb Challenge attracts riders from all over Australia, with the majority of teams formed out of Australia’s North West, and each year the event raises around $500,000 for its nominated charity.
This year will see funds donated to the Kyle Andrews Foundation for the purchase of a house in Perth to provide short to medium term accommodation to families from regional Western Australia with a child receiving urgent medical treatment at Perth’s new Children’s Hospital.
