Fortescue is leading the green industrial revolution by developing the technologies to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors (like iron ore operations) while building a global portfolio of renewable energy projects.
Fortescue Hydrogen Systems (FHS) will help our planet step beyond fossil fuels by harnessing the world’s renewable energy resources to produce world-class hydrogen production systems for any application. Our philosophy is to develop the most efficient and scalable solutions through our global R&D programs that are durable, safe and reliable to meet the highest demands.
FHS will offer a diverse array of electrolyser products, systems and services, encompassing multiple, cutting-edge technology types and membrane developments. This approach allows us to deliver market-leading hydrogen production solutions that offer reliability and scalability across all sectors.
By choosing High Pressure Proton Exchange Membrane (HP PEM) as the core technology, Fortescue PEM electrolysers bring the most cost-effective solution for true green hydrogen production. PEM stands out as the optimal choice for variable renewable power supply settings, providing resilience and durability to deliver truly green solutions. PEM also brings the added advantage of hydrogen delivered at high purity and pressure, making it superior for applications that require further compression. With fast ramping times and an industry-leading level of operability, Fortescue PEM electrolysers offer reliability and scalability, while reducing operating expenditure and the levelised cost of hydrogen (LCOH).
Fortescue's small, modular and self-contained hydrogen production solutions provide high-quality, pressurised hydrogen between 480kg/day to 2,400kg/day. These turnkey solutions boast a compact footprint, ease of transportation and installation, requiring inputs of only potable water and electricity. The FHS P1 and P5, known for their high efficiency and flexible operations, are highly responsive and rapidly deployable, enabling durable megawatt-scale production.
Fortescue industrial hydrogen production solutions are built for scale, not scaled up. The FHS P50 boasts a modular configuration that provides 24,000kg/day of high-quality, pressured hydrogen. With designs targeted specifically for high production volume, our solution offers genuine constructability, operability and maintainability advantages, leading to better economies of capital and operating cost. Design optimisation provides competitive capital and operational costs, resulting in best-in-class cost of ownership and competitive LCOH. The P50 includes the full Balance of System needed to produce high-purity hydrogen to meet the requirements of the most demanding end-uses.

The Gladstone Electrolyser Facility (GEF), the world’s largest electrolyser facility boasts a remarkable capability with an initial capacity of over two gigawatts per annum, significantly increasing global production levels. This capacity translates to over 200,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, positioning GEF as a pivotal player in advancing hydrogen adoption both locally and globally.
With its fully automated production line, Fortescue enables supply and quality assurance of our electrolyser systems.
The Gladstone PEM50 project, a 50 MW green hydrogen production plant, showcases Fortescue's technical expertise and commercial viability in hydrogen production systems, positioning the company as a global leader in manufacturing technology for industrial-scale green hydrogen applications.
Capable of producing up to 8,200 tonnes of green hydrogen annually starting in 2025, PEM50 will utilise electrolyser stacks from Fortescue's Gladstone Electrolyser Facility (GEF) and renewable generation sources in Queensland. The project's modular, replicable build design incorporates off-the-shelf equipment and is adaptable across Fortescue Energy's portfolio, optimising on-site footprint while ensuring segregation of hazardous and non-hazardous areas.
