Fortescue’s Hockey Carnival inspires the next generation of players

Fortescue Metals Group (Fortescue) and Hockey Australia have teamed up again to host the National Indigenous Hockey Carnival in the Pilbara, with fifty students participating from five schools within the region.
Fortescue Metals Group (Fortescue) and Hockey Australia have teamed up again to host the National Indigenous Hockey Carnival in the Pilbara, with fifty students participating from five schools within the region.
The National Indigenous Hockey Program and annual Hockey Carnival have been the hallmark of Fortescue’s relationship with the Kookaburras since the partnership began in 2011, with the Hockeyroos coming on board in January 2016.
“The National Indigenous Hockey Program is about more than simply encouraging children to play a great sport,” Fortescue Chief Executive Officer, Nev Power, said. “It exposes local kids to inspirational role models and instils in them the benefits of team work and a healthy lifestyle.”
Five members of the Kookaburras participated in the Carnival, coaching the students, as well as umpiring the games. Cam Vale, Chief Executive Officer of Hockey Australia, said the Hockey Carnival was a highlight for the players.
“It is a great opportunity for the players to share the sport they love with the kids and also give back to the community,” Mr Vale said.
Sarah Lynch, Health and Physical Education Specialist from Wickham Primary School, which hosted the Carnival, said it is a fantastic way for competing schools to have some fun, as well as improve the hockey and team work skills of the students.
“They are now passionate to continue to play hockey and are looking forward to competing again next year,” Ms Lynch said.
Fortescue, the Kookaburras and the Hockeyroos are committed to growing the Indigenous program over time.
“The program has been well received by students, teachers and the players themselves, we have a solid foundation to build on as we look to expand this great initiative,” Mr Power said.

Baynton West Primary, Pegs Creek Primary School, Roebourne Primary School, Tambrey Primary School and Wickham Primary School participated in the Carnival, which is the culmination of 10 weeks of hockey clinics, facilitated by Hockey Australia.
