A collision between a Fortescue rail maintenance truck and a contractor light vehicle occurred on Fortescue’s rail access road approximately 200 kilometres south of Port Hedland yesterday afternoon.
Fortescue’s emergency services team promptly responded to the incident to secure the scene and provide medical services with support from BHP and Roy Hill.
The person travelling in the contractor light vehicle sustained serious injuries and was transported to nearby Roy Hill Rail Camp 4 for treatment by a medevac team, then later transported to Port Hedland hospital for further treatment.
The person is in a serious but stable condition and is being transported to Perth by Royal Flying Doctor Service this morning, with his family being escorted to Perth to be by his side.
A Fortescue employee sustained a suspected fractured leg and was transported to Cloudbreak Mine for treatment and today will receive further treatment on his leg in Port Hedland.
Fortescue Chief Executive Officer Nev Power said that he was deeply concerned for the welfare of the contractor involved in the incident.
“Our thoughts are with him, his family and his workmates. We are all hoping he makes a full recovery and are offering support to his family and workmates,” he said.
Fortescue is working with the relevant authorities to establish the cause of the incident.
