In Australia, one woman is killed every week due to domestic violence. One in six people have experienced violence from a current or former partner, and Indigenous women are 34 times more likely to be hospitalised as a result of family violence.

Fortescue will be recognising White Ribbon Day with a series of events around its sites in the Pilbara, and at its corporate office in Perth.

Critically acclaimed Australian actress Claudia Karvan will join Nev Power in speaking out against violence towards women and encouraging employees to take the White Ribbon oath.

“At Fortescue, we value the importance of family and firmly believe we are each our brothers’ and sisters’ keeper. We accept our responsibility as an industry leader on important issues such as domestic and family violence,” Mr Power said.

“I believe, and research tells us, that building greater equality and respect between men and women can reduce attitudes that support violence. At Fortescue, we support and develop our female workforce, and actively practice and promote gender equity.

“I became a White Ribbon Ambassador because I am in a position to influence, educate and show leadership on this issue, not only in our workplace, but also in the wider community.”

Fortescue has a number of programs to support the wellbeing of its people including:
• Speak Up program – the program provides a number of channels for people to share their concerns in a confidential manner;
• Chaplains at all sites – A dedicated pastoral care service, their services are available for all Employees, Contractors, partners and dependent children; and
• Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
